COVID-19 In Quebec: Health Ministry Announced Another Presumptive Case
  • The Quebec Ministry of Health and Social Services announced another presumptive case of COVID-19 in the province.
  • If confirmed, it would be the 35th case in Canada.

This morning, the Ministry of Health and Social Services announced a second presumptive case of COVID-19 in Quebec. Public health officials are currently investigating the origin of this probable new case. In a press release, the Ministry writes that the person "came back from a trip."

According to procedure, an analysis must be performed by the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg before the Ministry of Health and Services can confirm if the patient is infected with the novel coronavirus.

There are no further details about this possible patient.

Should the case be confirmed, it would be the second case in Quebec and the 35th in Canada.

The Ministry of Health and Services was clear to point out that the risk of contracting COVID-19 in Quebec is still extremely low.

It recommends standard precautions such as washing your hands as the best way to safeguard yourself against the virus.

The Government of Canada continues to update its list of travel advisories for countries and regions that are affected by COVID-19, advising Canadians to avoid non-essential travel to places with outbreaks.

As of March 5 in Quebec, there is one new presumptive case, one confirmed case, 33 individuals under investigation, and another 203 negative tests.

The first confirmed case of COVID-19 was discovered about a week ago in Montreal.

The patient is a woman who recently visited Iran, a country that has been greatly impacted by COVID-19.

All other confirmed cases in Canada are in British Columbia and Ontario.

63 countries and regions have confirmed cases of COVID-19, with most of them in China.

In Canada, public health officials assert that the risk of exposure is low.

Montrealers have already been spotted taking precautions against exposure.

This week, people were seen lining up at grocery stores and to stock up food and water.

Public transit authorities are taking precautions and ramping up their cleaning schedules.

The STM wouldn't confirm if its new weekly cleaning initiative was in response to COVID-19.

"From the start, Quebec has been proactive and vigilant with a view to a possible spread here," said Danielle McCann, Quebec's Minister of Health.

"We take the situation very seriously. Coordination and communication mechanisms have been strengthened to be ready to deal with the situation."
