An Extremely Rare Friday The 13th Harvest Moon Will Be Visible Over Quebec Tonight

We are going to have some spectacular fall nights this year. Later in October we will have the chance to see two meteor showers light up the night sky. But tonight, Friday the 13th of all nights, the Montreal sky will be lit up with the Harvest Moon

This an extraordinarily rare occurrence. Not only was the last Friday the 13th full moon 13 years ago in 2006, but the last time we saw a Friday the 13th Harvest Moon was over 84 years ago in 1935.

For Montrealers, the lunar event will actually reach its apex at 12:33 a.m. on the morning of Sept 14. According to the Weather Network, "to have a Harvest Moon like we're seeing this Friday, however, with the full moon rising on September 13 and setting on September 14, you have to go back 152 years, to the year 1867!"

This full moon will appear about 14% smaller and 30% dimmer than most full moons as it will be at its farthest point in its four-week cycle. But don't let that stop you from admiring it.

So make sure your camera is charged tonight and try to find an area with the least light pollution to capture a few images of this once in a lifetime, rather spooky event.

A full moon closest to the autumnal equinox, which signifies the end of summer and start of fall, is the Harvest Moon.

As the days shorten towards the end of the year, the light of this full moon extended the hours that farmers could still harvest their crops, hence the name "Harvest Moon."

If you're superstitious, this Friday night may be a good one to stay in and invite a couple of friends over for a horror movie before you head out to catch the moon at its brightest and really, its most remarkable.

You really don't want to miss this Harvest Moon. The next time we even see a full moon on Friday the 13th will be in 2049. And an actual Friday the 13th harvest moon won't reappear again until 2171!
