Greta Thunberg Wants To Come To Montreal For A Huge Climate Change March Next Month

Greta Thunberg, the 16-year-old Swedish activist, has expressed interest in taking part in an upcoming Montreal climate change march.

La Planète s'invite au Parlement, the Quebec environmental group organizing the September 27 event, extended an invitation earlier this week to Thunberg.

"We announce this news with much excitement," the group wrote on its Facebook page. "Greta Thunberg hopes to march with us in Montreal on September 27!"

Thunberg hasn't accepted yet, the post clarifies, but she did express keen interest. A spokesman for the group, Rosemonde Gingras, told Le Devoir that Thunberg does indeed want to intend and the two groups have had "several exchanges and discussions" on the matter of logistics.

The young activist has previously expressed support for activism in Montreal during the "student strike" demonstrations back on March 15. The Montreal march was one of the largest demonstrations in the world during the Friday for the Future Global Walkout, with more than 150,000 students taking part.

Le Devoir goes on to say that Thunberg is interested in coming to Montreal because of the "strong mobilization" of young people of Quebec.

It would truly be an honour to not only have Thunberg visit Montreal to also take part in the September march. But we imagine there is a rather long list of cities that would love to have her visit.

Thunberg grabbed the attention of the media when she was only 15-years old and her "school strike for the climate" messaging built the massive environmental movement Fridays for Future

She has participated in the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, and she will attending the UN climate summits in New York and Chile this month.

The avid sailor just sailed across the Atlantic on a solar-powered, zero-emission sailboat to bring awareness to the carbon footprint of travel. As of this morning, she crossed the ocean and has docked on Coney Island.

In 2019 Thunberg was featured on the cover of Time magazine, which named her a "next generation leader" and to top it all off she was nominated for the Nobel Prize.

That is a lot to accomplish for someone who hasn't graduated high school.
