I Tried Montreal's New Vegan Sushi Restaurant, And This Is My Honest Opinion (Photos)

Good news for vegans, sushi lovers and foodies of all kinds: Montreal's new vegan sushi restaurant, Bloom,* has arrived to the Old Port meaning you can now finally try their amazing plant-based sushi.

I was lucky enough to visit last night and try a huge array of their amazing menu and I can tell you right now: you're going to want to check this place out.

I will say as a disclaimer: I am neither a vegan or a huge sushi lover, but I love trying plant-based creations and vegetarian rolls are actually my favourite when it comes to eating at a sushi restaurant.

I usually go for the tamago or inari and I live for a sweet potato roll, so I knew I was going to enjoy everything Bloom had to offer...

But I didn't know it was going to be this good.

Take a look at some of the pictures I snapped last night of my amazing dinner and I'll give you my honest opinion of everything I tried.

The décor at Bloom was actually done by the same creative designer that put together the look for Lov, another vegan staple in the city.

The vibe is similar to Lov, with an airy feel, lots of great natural textures, and a bunch of unique flowers and plants throughout, including the bathroom.

There is also a classic Japanese sushi bar where you can watch your little vegan rolls become pieces of edible art.

The dining room is a great size but really feels super cozy, tucked away on rue Saint-Paul, between McGill and rue Saint-Pierre.

I love how the décor gives little nods to the ocean, with the ropes hanging from the ceiling. I totally felt like the various natural elements, like the moss wall and the different flowers throughout gave the space an extra "organic" kind of atmosphere.

But enough about the décor! On to the food...

This miso soup is made with tofu, shiitake, enoki, green onion and seaweed and I found it sweeter than most other miso soups I had tried before - which I thought was a great thing.

Not aggressively salty, I thoroughly enjoyed this miso... and I'm not a huge mushroom girl but those shiitakes were awesome.

Another appetizer is the Beyond Roll, a deep-fried pseudo-spring roll made with Beyond Meat.

This was honestly my least favourite thing I tried, mainly because it just tasted like Beyond Meat. I would have way more enjoyed a classic veggie spring roll cause the saffron sauce was fantastic... but there is no running from, or mistaking that Beyond Meat flavour.

One of my absolute favourite things of the night was the Soba Mango salad.

The "salad" is a mix of green soba noodles, mango, red cabbage, cherry tomatoes, snow peas, and cilantro on a bed of arugula. It's dressed with a tamarind-sesame dressing and topped with fried lotus chips.

The rolls above are called "Moulin Rouge" and feature beets, avocado, takana, berries and a yuzu-basil sauce.

These rolls were SO fresh, with the combination of the berries, beets, and basil.... oh baby.

While the rolls below might not photograph well, let me tell you, they call it the Mr. Crunch for a reason.

The Mr. Crunch is an avocado roll that is covered in bubu arare balls (crunchy puffed rice) and then topped with shiitake, shimeji, enoki and oyster mushrooms with truffle sauce.

I mentioned above, I'm not huge on mushrooms and this roll killed me... it was so good. The combination of the avocado roll with the perfectly blended mushrooms was then blown out of the water with that amazing crunchiness. I died.

I got to try a handful of their other rolls and they were all completely amazing. There was not a single moment where I was wishing for fish and I barely touched the soy sauce on the table because everything was just so perfect as-is.

Not pictured, but a notable highlight, includes the Mr. Miyagi, which is a deep-fried oba leaf (like Japanese basil) topped with inari (sweet tofu), avocado, cucumber and mango all mixed in a sweet-spicy sauce. I could've eaten 100.

I also enjoyed their Bonzai cocktail and a shot of delicious sake, served cold.

The Bonzai cocktail featured peach and green tea, while the sake had the beautiful taste of pear.

I highly recommend Bloom sushi for your next vegan night out, your next sushi night out... or just any damn night out you want - trust me, the food is that good.

They've done a fantastic job of being innovative with classic dishes, providing a unique spin on Japanese cuisine and sushi in particular.

You won't be missing the sea with this one, so go give it a try.
