This week, McGill students grieved the loss of the iconic samosa sales that lined campus halls. City health inspectors shut down the beloved samosa operation early this week after they found that McGill's samosas violated safety codes. 

The news came as a shock to many McGill students as those $1 samosas were one of the main food staples of McGill's student community. The Students' Society of McGill University (SSMU) has now banned all samosa sales on campus thanks to city health inspectors. 

Health inspectors cancelled samosa sales because they found that the food was served at the wrong temperature. Not only that, but servers wore neither hairnets nor gloves and provided no utensils to customers. Still, despite being served out of a greasy box, the samosas were the lifeblood of the McGill student body. 

After a firestorm of rage on social media, TVM Television, McGill's campus TV station, released a touching video tribute to the lost samosas. Parodying We Are The World, a 1985 charity music video featuring the biggest stars of the '80s, "McGill For Samosas" is the tribute we all deserve. 

MTL Blog spoke with TVM Executive Producer Sofia Reidbord about the inspiration for "McGill For Samosas" and why the video is so important.

What made the team at TVM decide to make a video following the ban of samosa sales?

Given the recent news about the health inspection ban and the sorrow this has brought to the McGill community, TVM felt compelled to use our platform as a means of commemorating the samosa tradition.

TVM is constantly creating content that is reflective of campus life and since samosas have been an intrinsic part of student life at McGill, we couldn’t help ourselves. Over the past few days, there have been several memes and articles circulating the web, but our music video was a first.

How did you come up with the concept?

TVM VP external, Tory Fortunato, came up with the idea that we needed to make a video about the end of samosa sales because of the importance of this food item to so many students. While discussing with others, Tory and a few other TVM members collectively decided to create a parody using the song We are the World. TVM VP internal, Lila Taylor, had wanted to incorporate this song into a video for some time and we found this to be the perfect opportunity to do so. 

What do you hope to accomplish with the video?

We are hoping that this video would simply make people laugh and smile about the situation. We love samosas, loads of McGill students love samosas, and we wanted people to know that although the end of samosa sales are unfortunate, this ban is not at all the end of the world.

Do you think the video speaks to the McGill community's frustrations?

Yes, definitely. Especially given how affordable samosas are: 3 samosas for $2 and 1 for $1, which has been a great option for students who don’t have the time to make lunch or are trying to be economical. On-campus food options are not the most affordable for all students and samosas have been a great, quick bite on the run to class. 

Do you have any other plans to address the samosa issue?

Perhaps if there is an encore requested! We have certainly received a ton of great comments and feedback on this video!

The saddest news for McGill students is that they now have to make their own lunches (the horror!) 

Hopefully, something replaces the beloved McGill samosas, but for now, let's all grieve for a lost friend.
