  • Calling all art history lovers: Quebec City's MNBAQ is currently showcasing an exhibition with works by Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera at the forefront.
  • It explores Mexican modernism and is the perfect reason for you to take a trip to our province's capital between now and May.
  • Read more about the exhibition below!

While, as we're all aware, Montreal is blessed with some amazing museums, we don't always get the chance to have some travelling exhibitions in our city. But, if such exhibits do make their way to our province, they're likely to be found in Quebec City — if not Montreal. As proof of this point, the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ) currently has an exhibition going on with two of the most popular Mexican painters of all time: Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera.

The exhibition is called "Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera and Mexican Modernism." While Kahlo and Rivera are probably the most well-known names of the artists on display, there are many others' works that are part of the 150 piece collection, including paintings by María Izquierdo, David Alfaro Siqueiros, and Carlos Orozco Romero.

The couple, although having been famous for different art styles, were revolutionary together. Frida is known internationally for her self-portraits, and Rivera is recognized for his mural art in both Mexico and the United States.

If you ask me, getting to witness the works of one of the most influential couples in art history right in front of you is reason enough to go to Quebec City.

"Among art history’s mythic couples, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera reign supreme and continue to leave their mark on human imagination with their extraordinary destiny, more than 50 years after their death," the exhibition's description reads.

"The Mexican artists are recognized the world over both for their history of passion and their outstanding contribution to modern art."

During your visit to the MNBAQ, some of the couple's most famous works, including Frida's Diego On My Mind (1943) and Rivera’s Arum Vendor (1943), with your own eyes.

A ticket for this exposition will run anyone between the ages of 18 and 30 $12, and $22 for anyone between 30 and 65. Make sure to keep in mind that tickets are half off on Wednesdays between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. when planning your trip!

And, if you end up loving the MNBAQ, you'll surely be running back to Quebec City again during June of 2021, when a Picasso exhibition is said to be making its way to the museum.
