In mid-December, an MTL Blog reader sent us a photo of a sinkhole in downtown Montreal that swallowed up a city light on the corner of Guy and René-Lévesque. After contacting city officials, we discovered that the sinkhole was caused by a small water pipe rupture and that crews would repair the hole. Almost a month later, that sinkhole still isn't repaired.

Local Montrealer Crystal Rose Waugh captured an image of the sinkhole yesterday afternoon and sent it to MTL Blog via our socials.

Though covered in snow and what seems to be a protective sheet, the sinkhole is still alive and well — even growing.

It also seems that crews have erected a protective fence, separating the sidewalk from the city street.

What with all these measures in place to protect the people from the sinkhole, there seems to be little effort to actually repair the damages. 

MTL Blog reached out to city officials and asked if there was any plan to repair the sinkhole and they assured us that repairs are underway.

"The City of Montreal is working to solidify the sector," they say, "work is ongoing and the area is safe." 

Snow has covered the sinkhole, potentially making it more challenging to repair.

But the hole could further expand if more water damage occurs.

The photo from December 11 below shows the sinkhole on the day when it first opened up.

In the photo from January 6, it's clear the sinkhole has turned the corner of the construction site and begun to swallow more of the surrounding objects.

Construction on either side of the street where the sinkhole sits further complicates travel for pedestrians.

When the sinkhole first appeared in December, Montreal police closed both directions of Guy between René-Lévesque and Saint-Antoine, halting traffic for most of the day until around 4 p.m.

Montreal's sometimes sketchy infrastructure creates these small sinkholes that occasionally claim lights, orange cones, or even entire bulldozers. 

Hopefully, the city of Montreal is able to repair the sinkhole soon before it gets any worse. As of now, the city assures us that everything is ok.

For now, there is no further information about the sinkhole. All we can do is sit and wait until the City of Montreal repairs it.
