Be sure to thank your local cashiers, janitors, and shelf restockers (from a safe two-metre distance). Several Montreal-area grocery store workers have tested positive for COVID-19, according to lists released by Metro and Sobeys, which owns IGA. Both companies say they have made their lists public to be transparent to their customers.
At the time of writing, Metro has been notified of 22 infections in Quebec since March 17. Among Sobeys' Quebec staff and franchise employees, 16 positive tests have been reported since March 28.
"We will always notify and follow the guidance of Public Health to support our teammates," they wrote in almost identical statements.
"Out of an abundance of caution, with each case that is reported, we will deep clean and sanitize the store location."
They also say they will notify customers at each affected location with signage.
The companies have further instituted numerous precautionary measures to protect employees at their stores and affiliate locations, including the installation of plexiglass shields at checkout points, reduced store hours, and the closure of self-serve counters.
"We will always do everything we can to support our teammates and ensure their safety," they added.
