Montreal Ranked The #8 'Booziest' City In The World

I kind of thought we would be higher.
Cheers among friends with drinks.

It's no secret that Montreal enjoys an alcoholic beverage or two on occasion. Between liquor festivals, cocktail bars, and wine delivery apps, we are a city that likes to imbibe.

Turns out, it's a city that tourists like to imbibe in too and it's especially popular with Instagrammers

The guys over at looked at 1,000 Instagram posts tagged with #VacationMode or #Vacay over 143 cities to study how alcohol is portrayed in social media

Ok, perhaps it's not the most scientific study ever. And yeah, perhaps it's not surprising Montreal ranked the 8th booziest city in tagged vacation posts that featured alcohol.

Check out the graphs to see how Montreal and Canada fared down the board.

Montreal came in with a solid 4.6%of tagged social posts featuring alcohol. We even tied with Vancouver —the only other Canadian city listed.

It's kind of surprising that Portland, Oregon came in at number one with nearly 10% (not a city you necessarily equate with getting soused) and yet Cancún was nearly at the bottom with only 3.5%

When those numbers are broken down by country, Canada slides up the list to the 2nd spot, with Sweden claiming first place in global guzzling. Again, rather surprising with the U.S. all the way down at number 4

If you're looking to build up your followers on Instagram or get more likes, you should put the glass down. According to these stats, posts containing a drink get less than half of the likes than a post that doesn't

So I guess it's time to get out of the bar and actually see a city?

Thirty-six percent of drinks posted were cocktails (what's prettier than a perfectly poured martini with a thin layer of ice over the top) and only 4.7% were whiskeys.

But still, the most popular single drink to post is a good ole' pint of beer. Not surprising since it is Canada's most sold alcohol
