Montreal STM Sets Record For Most Days Without A Major Orange Line Shutdown In 2019

Montreal commuters will be happy to know that the STM orange line is currently in its longest streak without a major shutdown since the beginning of 2019.

The last major shutdown, which we will describe as a service interruption whose scope or duration (usually longer than 10 minutes) warranted an official notice on the Ligne Orange Twitter account, was on April 16th — a full 27 days ago.

Of course, this record does not account for delays for which the Ligne Orange Twitter account did not publish an alert or service update.

This was the last time the Ligne Orange account alerted the public to a service interruption:

The previous record for longest streak without a major orange line interruption in 2019 occurred between February 25th and March 9th for a total of 12 days.

In third place is the period of 10 days without a shutdown between February 4th and 14th.

These are only the streaks since January 1st, 2019. Though note that the last orange line interruption before January 4th was on December 12th, 2018 — 23 days apart.

The orange line is the busiest of the STM metro network. Crossing between Laval, the Plateau Mont-Royal, Berri-UQAM station, and downtown Montreal, it is a critical transit node.

Service interruptions can often be blamed on passenger actions. Crowding may only increase potential for major shutdowns.

In an effort to alleviate the burden on the organe line, the STM has introduced a number of measures in the last few months, including more frequent trains during its busiest hours and, just this week, a new bus line that will run along its route between Beaubien and Berri-UQAM stations.

As many as 21,500 people enter the Orange line between those stations during peak hours, according to the STM and CBC.

The STM is also adding trains during its busiest hours, according to a Twitter post.

Last fall, the STM ran an ad campaign whose aim was to raise awareness of passenger actions that could result in service delays.
