Montreal To Break 26-Year Snowfall Record With This Storm

The current snowstorm, potentially the biggest of the winter, is just the latest turn in a hectic few weeks of weather for Montreal.

Alternating periods of above and below-average temperatures have already decimated city roads and sidewalks, which are about to be hit with up to 35-40cm of snow.

In fact, if snow accumulates as much as expected between Tuesday and Wednesday, the city could end up breaking a 26-year snowfall record for February 13th.

TL;DR If, indeed 35-40cm of snow falls between Tuesday and Wednesday, Montreal will break the 26-year record for snowiest February 13th.

That's according to weather historian Rolf Campbell who shared these graphics on his page, YUL Weather Records, earlier today:

With 35cm of forecast snow, tomorrow could be #Montréal's snowiest Feb 13th since records began in 1872.

February 12, 2019

As you can see, February 13th, 2019 will stand out as an outlier date for snowfall on this calendar day.

At 35cm, the snowfall from this current storm will surpass that of February 13th, 1993, when 32.2cm of snow fell. Before '93, February 13th, 1923 held the record.

Environment Canada is warning residents of the Montreal metro area that "rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations."

"Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow," the weather warning continues.

Roads are likely to become hazardous and Montreal residents should avoid travel, even work from home Wednesday if they can.

Stay tuned for more snow-related news. The storm is sure to lead to some typical Montreal antics.
