Last week we took to Twitter to ask users what the strangest thing they ever experienced in Montreal was. The answers ranged from the totally bizarre, like the free-range rooster wandering the streets late at night, to the expected, like Montreal's constantly devolving road structures and never-ending construction dance.

We've all had our share of the bizarre. Last summer I was crossing the street at the corner of de Maisonneuve and Crescent while someone was walking their tiger down the crosswalk. A freakin' tiger. It even had a leash. To this day my friend and I have to ask, "Wait, we really did see that, right? It wasn't a dream?"

But what makes Montreal truly Montreal? What are moments so stereotypical that you wouldn't even need to see the word 'Montreal' attached to the tweet and you would know it took place in this city?

The answers won't surprise you. We've all experienced them in one way or another. Some are funny, and other's are thorns in our side that don't seem to be getting any better, and some of them are rather sad. But they are all things as Montrealers that we can share and nod knowingly in agreement to.

Living in a province that is truly multilingual is a huge part of what gives Montreal it's personality. Walking into most any business in the city and you'll be greeted with "bonjour-hi" signaling to customers, 'Hey, we speak both languages here."

Sometimes conversations are held in both languages at the same time! 

But if your French accent is great, some of the street names and asking for directions can be tricky.

What would this list be without the frustration of Montreal road work? The responses listed were unanimously about the state of Montreal construction.

I can't count the times I've been late for a meeting or job because of all the detours. 

And with all the construction comes the strange.

As a lover of Montreal though hater of the winters, I have a personal reaction to this tweet.

Then, of course, there is the negative and rather shitty part of Montreal. We feel for this guy but he does still seem to have a pretty positive attitude! 

Bike theft is a prerequisite for anyone who wants to call themselves a Montrealer.

And who among us hasn't dealt with the frustrations of our medicare system?

One great thing is that Montreal never stands still, we are constantly changing. 

But there are some things that never do.

There were also the more unexpected answers like this guy who got to experience Expo67 and a ride on the new metro.

There are some people that have a very different type of Montreal experience. Either that or a few too many trips to the SQDC. 

But let's end this on a sweet note. These typical Montreal moments are the ones that make us 'awwww.'
