3 Of Montreal's Most Popular Markets Will Still Be Open This Summer

The City of Montreal has recently made an exciting announcement: seasonal markets are allowed to continue their activity in multiple boroughs this summer. This means that Montreal's Atwater, Jean-Talon, and Maisonneuve markets are going to be going about their businesses as usual. So, you'll still be able to get your hands on your favourite local spices, cheeses, bread, jams, and more.

But, things won't be the exact same as they have been during past summers.

These three markets have reduced hours and new safety measures are being implemented.

Specific health measures that are being enforced include mandatory hand-washing for anyone who enters the markets, the need to keep a two-metre distance away from others, only takeout will be available at restaurants and sitting areas will be closed, and common areas will be washed more frequently.

Hand-washing stations will also be put in the middle of these three markets for customers to use in the midst of their shopping.

But hey, this is good news regardless of it being different than what we're used to!

As we learn to adapt to a new normal, similar measures are likely to be taking place in businesses across the city.

So, this summer, Montrealers will still be able to have access to some of the freshest produce in the province.

This is especially awesome considering so many of us are starting to pick up cooking skills at the moment.

"These markets are considered essential services in the same way as grocery stores and other food businesses," the City's press release told us.

And, if you've been hoping to start turning your apartment into a little greenhouse, you still can!

While life may be different than we're used to right now, just know that summer in Montreal has not been completely cancelled.

We'll have our favourite markets to visit to help keep us sane!

In a statement, Mayor Valérie Plante said that with keeping markets open, "we support our producers, merchants and artisans and ensure a diversified diet, particularly in food deserts where Montrealers eagerly await the return of seasonal markets to stock up on fresh produce."
