Montreal's Free Cabane à Sucre Street Festival Is Coming Back This Month

It's going to be the lumberjack party of the year!
Montreal's Free Cabane à Sucre Street Festival Is Coming Back This Month

You have to celebrate when you make it to ten years, and that is what this year's tenth anniversary of Montreal's Cabane Panache street festival, which takes place in Verdun, is doing. Go big or go home, right? This year's festival will be the biggest one yet with over 100,000 lumberjacks in attendance on Wellington, more sugar than should be allowed in one place — and with the event tag line, "the biggest wood party in town," how could you not want to go?

It's not just all flannel and wood, there will be a ton of live music shows from some of your favourite Quebec singers and bands.

There is also the Cookerie de la Cabane which includes 18 Verdun restauranteurs who will be mixing up some unique dishes especially for the event. And of course, there will be drinks. There will be a lot of beer to go around.

For four days this month — March 19 to 22 — you can take part in the festival for the low, low price of completely free. While you may want to spend a few dollars on some of the different events like the food and drinking portion or to grab a few of your favourite finds at the general store, you can do most everything else for free.

It is best to go to this festival hungry. The full lineup of food vendors has been released and includes things like maple smoked pogos, a maple sugar tartlet with candied bacon, poor man's pudding, and of course "Quebec's liquid gold" (maple on ice), and that's just to name a few.

This year all dishes are priced at only $3 or $5. And every menu item looks better than the next. Case in point: there is also mac and cheese with smoked ham and bacon with maple BBQ sauce.

This is a lumberjack party, so imagine some of the real feats of strength that you can try out. Face off against a giant lumberjack and see if you can get him to move, see what it was like before power tools and test out a real godendart on a log. Or just get some axe throwing practice in.

Don't forget to bring your beard if you really want to fit in. There are free beard trims from Beardlington and Dillinger's and there is also an official longest beard contest with prizes to go to the winner of the most lumberjack-esque facial hair.
