The immersive Imagine Van Gogh exhibit has finally landed in Montreal and will open its door to the public this week. Tickets to the Starry Night experience went on sale in November and already there are three days completely sold out. Montreal's Arsenal art contemporain is playing host to the massive exhibition of the famous painter's most well-known works and you should really buy your tickets now... before they sell out.
The exhibition is presented by Paul Dupont-Hébert and Tandem and uses the converted former shipyard-turned-contemporary art space in Little Burgundy to display Van Gogh's iconic paintings on a massive scale.
Paintings on exhibit include Starry Night, of course, as well as Irises and Sunflowers, Bedroom in Arles, and more.
The paintings are also accompanied by iconic composers like Saint-Saëns, Mozart, Bach, Delibes, and Satie, which will help set the mood and transport you to a world created by Van Gogh.
The exhibit goes until February 2, 2020, but you should keep in mind that the three of the first four days are already sold out — and you likely won't want to miss this experience.
Tickets are sold in half-hour time slots to discourage overcrowding in the space and allow for guests to amble through the exhibit unperturbed by crowds.
The images are projected at different angles using 3D shapes that allow viewers to create their own journey and come "closer than ever to the paintings," where they can "feel the power of the artist's work," Imagine Van Gogh explains.
The exhibit space is completely dark, save for the lighted installations that project the paintings. There is no set path, meaning visitors can wander around at will, experiencing the space in their own way.
The exhibit was designed by Annabelle Mauger and uses the concept of "Image Totale, which situates the spectator right inside the paintings in order to explore their fine detail."
There will be over 200 works of Van Gogh projected in this fashion throughout the exhibit, meaning it will be so much more than just Starry Night.
