It's no secret that Montrealers love to be outside in the summer. The proof? All of the terrasses that pop up during the summer in the city.
Santropol is a cozy Montreal favourite that serves amazing sandwiches and great desserts. It is open year round, but their terrasse, which is one of the most beautiful in the city, only opens its doors in the summer.
The patio, nestled in the Plateau, is the perfect place to get some sun and chat with friends. It's now open for the summer, and you have to go.
Santropol, located on the corner of St-Urbain and Duluth, has been in business since 1976. It was originally founded in order to save the beautiful building in which it is located.
The café's website states that "since that time it has become an institution in the neighbourhood and meeting place for people from all walks of life both from Montreal and around the world."
It is well-known for its homemade sandwiches, which it makes with fresh, thick-cut slices of bread. Santropol bread loaves are available for purchase, and I highly recommend that you grab one on your way out.
They also have delicious, comforting soups and amazing desserts. The carrot cake, served in giant slabs, are a customer favourite and the perfect way to finish off your meal.
Of course, one of the best parts of the café is its terrasse. Tucked just beside Parc Jeanne-Mance, it's a little urban oasis with colourful and eclectic décor.
The trees offer a good amount of shade and the little fountain in the middle of the courtyard makes for a very soothing sound.
It's now officially open for the summer, and I suggest you head there right away for a Chaucer sandwich, iced tea and a giant slice of cake. Bon apétit!
