Montreal's Naked Bike Ride Is Back This Summer & You're Actually Allowed To Use BIXIs

The World Naked Bike Ride is returning to Montreal this year and for those who are wondering — yes, you can use BIXIs. Last year's event attracted dozens of exhibitionists that bared all they dared while biking through the streets of Montreal. An immensely popular international event, the World Naked Bike Ride began in 2004 to promote eco-consciousness and environmentalism.

As its slogan says, "more ass, less gas."

Montreal's Naked Bike Ride will be on July 18, 2020. There will be two rides, one in the afternoon and one at night.

Our city's first edition of the ride took place in 2009 and has become a yearly event since then. The event has grown in popularity over the years, with more people choosing to bare it all to protest our dependence on fossil fuels.

If you remember last year, an MTL Blog reader spotted a large group of naked bike riders on rue Sainte-Catherine that were riding on BIXI bikes.

As questionable as that might seem, we spoke to Pierre Parent, Communications Manager for BIXI Montreal about the upcoming event and whether people were actually allowed to bike naked on a BIXI.

Parent explained that other than the standard, recommended use of helmets and shoes, there are no rules as so what BIXI riders choose to wear or not wear.

Though he made clear that BIXI neither endorses nor condemns the event, naked riding is, indeed, allowed.

He only asks that naked riders cover the bike seats with plastic to prevent the transference of fluids.

Montreal's Naked Bike Ride traditionally begins at Dorchester Square on rue Peel and then snakes its way through downtown.

The event is escorted by police, also on bikes, but a lot less nude than the ones they're safeguarding.

So, if you're planning on attending the World Naked Bike Ride on a BIXI, please make sure to bring a plastic bag.

And maybe a wet-wipe (or a hundred).
