Montreal's Old Port Is Transforming Into A FREE 18th-Century Market

Have you ever longed for the days of yore?
Pointe-à-Callière 18th century market in the Montreal Old Port

It's nearly impossible to choose which Montreal markets to visit this summer. But if you're looking for a little history with your shopping, then Pointe-à-Callière's Public Market is the one to see.

The Museum of Montreal is gearing up for its annual two-day 18th-century market that has run in the Old Port of Montreal for over a quarter of a century now.

If you've ever wanted to be transported back in time and see what a public market in Montreal New France was like before the turn of the century, this is your time to do it.

Pointe-à-Callière's Public Market is one of the Museum's main events. It takes place on the very spot it was originally held during the French regime.

Let's set the scene: usually held twice a week, markets at that time were where everyone went... well, for pretty much everything.

Sellers, innkeepers, musicians, the high and the low class rubbed noses, craftsmen made money for the week, bailiffs read out decrees and basically, everyone got together to see what everyone else was doing.  Imagine Crescent street during the Grand Prix, with a couple bottles of absinthe thrown into the mix.

The museum puts on a great historical reenactment with all the actors dressed in period costumes. There is period music and dancing along with vendors for wares sold at the time like jams, maple products (of course), ciders and a whole list of foods.

Some of the period scenes you should check out are the military regiments and a native encampment.

It's just like being in the heart of New France in 1733, but with more access to showers.
