One of the best things about winter is skating outdoors. As Canadians, we're spoiled with ice rinks that let us skate all year long, but there's nothing quite like skating outside. Which is why I'm so excited Montreal's Old Port skating rink, the Patinoire du Vieux-Port, is finally opening on Saturday, December 7, 2019. It's one of the city's best spots to skate and hang out during the winter, whether you're from the city or just visiting — and it makes a fantastic cheap date night.
And it's got some really cool stuff planned, as always, so don't think you'll just be going around in circles.
The rink, which is nestled into the Bassin Bonsecours, will be hosting three kinds of theme nights, including a karaoke night, Saturday night fireworks (which will run all through December), and DJ nights starting in the new year.
It's just another great way to beat the blues of winter, shake off the cold and get some exercise in Montreal as our days get shorter and the sun slinks away earlier.
Plus, it provides an excellent spot for a date. You can skate around and then hop off the ice, grab a hot chocolate at the bistro, and warm up by a small bonfire.
If you don't have skates, don't worry, there are rentals on-site, so you can pick them up when you get there.
And if you have your own skates, they also offer sharpening, so you can liven up those old blades that have been in the closet since last year.
Starting Saturday, December 7, 2019, the rink will be open every day of the week until 9 or 10 p.m., including Christmas Day.
Plus, it'll be open until 1 a.m. on New Year's Eve.
