New Champlain Bridge Pedestrian & Bike Path Opens Today With Spectacular Views Of The City

Montreal's new Samuel de Champlain Bridge will officially open a multi-use pedestrian and bike path today. After four years of construction, the bridge was opened to traffic this summer, on July 1, to much celebration. The new multi-use path will offer some of the most spectacular views of the city with four lookout areas along the bridge's 3.4-kilometre span.

The path will be open year-round, hence the late December opening. Though it might be scantly used during the winter months, the bridge path will probably be a popular attraction once the weather gets warmer.

The new path will be shared by both cyclists and pedestrians, which hopefully won't cause too many headaches. Cyclists will need to be aware of and respect the 20km/hour speed limit. There will be cameras and emergency assistance points along the entire path to ensure that it's always safe.

Those who use the path will be able to bike or walk from the City of Montreal's Île-des-Sœurs to the South Shore (La Riveraine bike path). The path will be closed during extreme weather such as heavy snowfall, wind, and rain.

Officially open on December 23 at 1 p.m., the Champlain Bridge's new multi-use pedestrian and bike path will soon be all over your Insta feed.

Those who are coming from Montreal will need to first go to Île-des-Sœurs to access the path.

Scooters and motorbikes won't be allowed on the path. It's unclear whether Lime scooters, electric BIXI or Uber Jump bikes will be allowed.

The news was announced this morning by SSL and the team at the Samuel de Champlain Bridge.

Path users will need to be careful and aware of bike congestion and other environmental hazards like heavy wind and rain.

Expect the path to be extremely busy and popular during the summer. Bring plenty of sunscreen and your best camera!

If you've ever walked across the Tappan Zee Bridge or the George Washington Bridge in New York City, you'll get a similar vibe here in Montreal.

Along with the eight-lane highway and the multi-use bike path, the new Champlain Bridge will soon open a REM train access.

See you all on the path soon!
