Have you ever wanted to be transported back in time? Because I know I have.
There are a lot of things I would want to check out if I had a time machine. I am so curious about what things were like way back when. As someone who loves markets (and shopping all together), I have always dreamt about what those legendary 18th-century public markets were like and this weekend I am going to get to find out first hand... and so can you!
No time machine necessary!
That's right, the annual two-day 18th-century market hosted by The Museum of Montreal is this weekend in the Old Port. This free event has been going on for over twenty-five years and there is a reason why... it's awesome!
Pointe-a-Calliere’s Public Market is a main event for the Museum and it actually takes place in the exact same spot it used to be held, back when Montreal was New France.
During the 18th century, Montreal was under the French Regime and these markets were held twice a week and let me tell you, it was the place to be back then... and apparently, it is even today!
Back in the day, markets were all there was when it came to shopping. Everyone went to get literally everything they needed. It was kind of like a Wal-Mart, only a little more authentic.
Merchants, musicians and craftsmen all came together to provide shoppers with everything they would need to get through the week.
The market was a weekly gathering where high class and low-class citizens came together with the common need for purchasing goods.
Today, the museum puts on historical reenactments with actors who are dressed in period costumes.
There will also be some fun dancing, authentic period music and vendors for wares sold at that time including maple products, ciders and jams.
This is a great history lesson as well as an opportunity to get some tasty snacks to take home!
There will be a slew of period scenes to check out including a native encampment and military regiments, which are really entertaining to watch, giving you a glimpse to what life was like way back in the day.
This is not only a fun activity to participate in but it is also a great educational experience that is not one to be missed!
