Quebec Is Reopening Hair Salons In June But Not In The Montreal Area

The government has presented its plan to continue the gradual reopening of the province. Beginning in June, Quebec hair salons, dental offices, and other personal care services will begin to welcome back clients. Private health care practices will reopen on June 1 across the province. Personal aesthetic care services like salons, meanwhile, will open on June 1 only outside of the Greater Montreal Area as well as Joliette.

The government has not yet determined when these services can open in Montreal.

Deputy Premier Geneviève Guilbault made the announcement at the daily COVID-19 press briefing on Wednesday.

"There was a lot of talk about the impatience, or at least the haste, of people to see, among other things, hair salons reopen," she said.

"So, this will be good news that will be welcomed, I'm sure."

She also made clear that authorities will continue to evaluate the situation and make adjustments if necessary.

"We won't hesitate to set back or change dates because health is the priority. Therefore, the best way for our investments to continue to pay off and then be profitable is to continue to invest in prevention and protection measures, and in distancing and hygiene."

More details are forthcoming.

These services will join the many other formerly non-essential businesses that will gradually resume operations over the next month.

Businesses and elementary schools outside the Montreal metropolitan community (CMM) have already begun to reopen.

National parks, as well as certain sporting activities, have also reopened.

Retail stores with their own entrances from the outside are due to open in the CMM on May 25, Legault confirmed Monday.

Municipal leaders have already begun to plan for a summer like no other.

In Montreal, hundreds of kilometres of streets will be transformed to better accommodate pedestrians and cyclists.

Some of the most popular commercial thoroughfares will be pedestrian-only.

The government has stressed, however, that the public must continue to follow health and safety recommendations.

Premier Legault warned Tuesday that he would "put the brakes on reopening" the province if there's a second wave of COVID-19.

Stay tuned for more news.
