Premier François Legault and the Quebec public have reasons to be proud. According to the latest Google statistics on social distancing measures, Quebec has the best track record in Canada. As of March 29, 2020, Quebecers have done the best job at social distancing in Canada compared to baseline numbers recorded during a five-week period between January 3 and February 6, 2020.
The data analyzed behavioural changes and mobility changes in the following categories: retail and recreation, grocery and pharmacy, parks, transit, workplace, and residential.
Quebec was among the first Canadian provinces to install social distancing regulations and to close non-essential businesses.
Google's mobility report numbers are meant to indicate changes in public behaviours and movement after social distancing measures were put in place. The information is aggregated from information on Google Maps.
The data shows "how visits and length of stay at different places change compared to a baseline," according to Google.
Legault praised the data, saying, "I am very proud of it, the state that respects the guidelines the most is Quebec. I am really proud of Quebecers, proud to see these results."
"Well done and thank you to all Quebecers. I am convinced that this will save hundreds of lives."
Nationally, Canadians do indeed respect social distancing rules in all categories.
