Residents of Montreal's Rosemont can now receive a $40 subsidy on menstrual products as part of the borough's Washable Diaper Program, Lange Bleu. The program was renewed until the end of 2020. Lange Bleu has helped hundreds of families in Rosemont-La-Petite Patrie since it was first introduced in 2010.

Borough Mayor François William Croteau said that since its inception, Lange Bleu has "diverted some 340,000 disposable diapers from landfill, encouraging results that inspire us to continue and expand our offer of financial support for other types of sustainable hygiene products." The subsidy for menstrual products was a long-anticipated addition to the Lange Bleu program.

To benefit from the subsidy, Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie locals will need to provide proof of purchase for products bought in 2020. Residents can receive up to $40 for sustainable menstrual products such as diva cups, sanitary napkins, and washable underwear.

"Its activities are carried out with a view to sustainable development and the social economy, aiming to reduce the impact on the environment and human health."

To apply for the subsidy, you need to register online and have an address in the borough. Once the refund request is approved, the refund will appear in your bank account.

Along with this new subsidy for menstrual products, Lange Bleu will maintain its program for reusable diapers.

A total of 50 purchase subsidies for washable diapers will be given out to families in the neighbourhood on a first-come, first-served basis. Families can receive up to $180 back for the purchase of up to 20 diapers.

The reason behind Lange Bleu's menstrual product initiative is "reduce at the source the waste buried or incinerated in Quebec, especially in the early childhood and incontinence sectors." And to promote sustainable practices in the borough.

According to Lange Bleu, "a person uses 290 hygienic protection products each year, which means that they will throw away between 10,000 and 15,000 during their lifetime."

"Sustainable feminine hygiene products are an ecological and economical choice," continues Lange Bleu.

"They help reduce your environmental footprint and, since they do not contain any chemicals, they also promote your health."

Eligible feminine hygiene products include menstrual cups, sanitary napkins, and reusable menstrual underwear. The $40 subsidy is only available to Rosemont-La-Petite-Patrie residents who purchased such products since January 1, 2020.
