Street Parking Is About To Get A Lot More Expensive In Montreal For The First Time In Over 10 Years

Finding street parking in Montreal is already a pretty difficult task. Most of the time you could be left circling the street for half an hour before a spot becomes available, and even then you can find yourself in a parking war with another driver. After all of the stress of finding an adequate place to leave your vehicle comes the even worse part: paying extremely inflated hourly parking fees.

TL;DR The city of Montreal has announced that, beginning April 1st, street parking prices will increase by $0.25 per hour. This could affect the number of visitors to boroughs with more expensive parking rates. More details below.

Although we all might agree that city parking is already expensive enough, we're in for an extremely unpleasant development come spring.

That's right, the city of Montreal will be increasing the hourly rate of parking meters starting on April 1st. All boroughs will be hiking the price up $0.25 per hour. For example: street parking in downtown Montreal will go from $3 an hour to $3.25. That's an extra dollar every four hours!

Having a car in the city just became way more expensive.

The decision was made in December right before the holidays, which is why the news went so unnoticed. Although prices have not changed for the majority of Montreal boroughs since 2007, the Plante administration claims that it reflects the cost of inflation.

One of the major concerns about the street parking price hike is that motorists in busier boroughs such as the Plateau-Mont-Royal will spend less time shopping while their cars are racking up additional costs outside and instead travel to other boroughs where the parking rates are significantly lower.

With many streets closed off to vehicles in the summer months already limiting where motorists can park, the new parking prices will likely only add to the frustration Montreal drivers already experience.

Stay tuned for more information on Montreal's new street parking prices.
