The City of Montreal has issued a boil water advisory for a large portion of the northeastern part of the city. Rivière-des-Prairies, Pointe-aux-Trembles and Montréal-Est are all currently impacted, along with the water in the river north of the island, though no boil water advisory has yet been issued in Laval.

The statement on the advisory page indicates that "the city is taking all necessary measures at the present time to determine the source of the problem and correct it."

We reached out to the city for further information regarding the cause of the advisory, though their response left me with more questions than answers.

For now, the city is advising the boiling of water for anyone who lives between Henri-Bourassa Est and rue Gouin Est from Boulevard Albert-Hudon all the way to the intersection of Boulevard Gouin Est and Autoroute 40, where the island effectively ends.

A small section around Autoroute Metropolitan, east of Bourget, is also under the advisory.

Translation: ⚠ PREVENTIVE BOILING NOTICE ⚠ A boil water advisory has just been issued for sectors of the Rivière-des-Prairies—Pointe-aux-Trembles borough and the City of Montréal-Est.

In a statement to MTL Blog, a spokesperson from the City of Montreal explained that "work on the City of Montreal's water system has reduced pressure and interrupted service in the east of the island of Montreal this morning."

"The situation has been restored. A preventive boil water advisory is currently in effect in the borough of Rivière-des-Prairies—Pointe-aux-Trembles and the City of Montreal-East," they continued.

It is unclear how this drop in pressure has impacted the water in this region, or what the boil water advisory is preventing.

Until further notice, the city is asking citizens to boil any water that will be consumed for at least a minute. This includes water that you brush your teeth with or plan to make ice cubes with.

"Dispose of ice cubes (don't forget refrigerator water dispensers!), food or beverages that were prepared after the date of the advisory with unboiled tap water," the page continues.

Unboiled tap water can be used to shower, do laundry or wash dishes, given that the water is hot and the dishes are well dried.

And don't swallow any bathwater.
