- After initially announcing the cancellation of their cheer squad, the Montreal Alouettes cheerleaders are officially coming back this year.
- The decision reversal came after an outpouring of support for the cheer team from fans.
We have some good news to share with you, Montreal! Last week, MTL Blog reported the news that the Montreal Alouettes’ cheerleaders would not be coming back in the summer of 2020. The cheerleading team’s coach, Annie Larouche, made the heartbreaking announcement on Facebook, stating that the decision was due to financial reasons. But on Monday, the Alouettes announced on the team website that the cheerleaders will, in fact, be back again this year.
"The Montreal Alouettes announced today that they have reconsidered their decision; the best cheerleaders in the country will be part of the game to continue to impress the crowd with their athletic choreographies,” they write.
Whether or not you’re a sports fan, this is great news for our city and its culture, of which both the Alouettes and their cheerleaders are a large part.
The latest decision means the 40 current members on the cheer team will get to keep their jobs for this upcoming summer.
It seems that the cheerleaders’ fans are to thank for the cheer squad's survival.

“The fans reached out, our members spoke up, they asked us in a very constructive and respectful manner, for the vast majority of them, to reconsider our position,” the post on the website states.
“They also clearly demonstrated their profound attachment to our cheerleader team, and to the Alouettes. Consequently, we listened and read all communication.”
"We are aiming to invite representatives of the cheerleaders as early as this week to talk with management and move forward in a manner that is satisfactory to both the fans, and the Alouettes."
"Again, we appreciate the comments that support the team and prove the value it has in the eyes of the fans."
Coach Larouche shared her initial reaction on Facebook, writing simply, "MERCI."
An outpouring of support has also erupted in the comments section under the Alouettes' social media posts announcing the cheerleaders' return.
Many are questioning the initial decision to cancel the squad, which came as the football team came under new management.
Can’t wait to see your brilliant choreography in action yet again this summer, Alouettes cheerleaders!
