The countdown to Halloween has begun. With just over six weeks to come up with the perfect costume, the Opéra de Montréal is making it a whole lot easier to find something unique.
For the first time ever, the company will be reaching into the depths of its vast closet and selling some of its most treasured costumes. And they're starting at the low, low price of five dollars each.
According to the General Director, Patrick Corrigan, “We need to make room for new productions in our costume workshop. So, we thought it would be really fun to let people acquire a piece of Opéra de Montréal history, at a very affordable price.”
That is an incredibly low price for clothes created specifically for the stage. For sale they will have a host of kimonos, dresses, redingotes, full outfits, armour, and capes. And for the opera fans out there, they will also have stage props, helmets, and vintage posters that you can snatch up.
You can take a look below to see some of the outstanding pieces that will be on sale from the most popular operas like Othello, Madama Butterfly, and Rigoletto, to name a few.
Halloween connoisseurs will have a field day at this sale.
The sale will be held for one day only on September 28, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. It's on a first-come, first-served basis so you may want to get there early. All the costumes are sold as-is and there will be no returns available.

There are hundreds of items available. But we imagine the five-dollar costumes will go fast. There will also be a few pieces priced higher for collectors who want something a little more exceptional and rare.

You can see the attention to detail in some of the handstitched costumes, like the one below from the 1989 production of Le Comte d'Ory.

The kimono above was worn for the much applauded Madama Butterfly. The flowers are all handpainted and it's in great condition. You don't even need an excuse to wear this. Just throw it on and pretend you're a tragic Puccini character lamenting the loss of love.
Be sure to get there early as it's sure to sell out quickly!
