As the old adage goes, I'm not much for running, unless being chased. But the Ultra Night Run in Montreal is one crazy event I would actually find my running shoes for.
This is one of the few races in Montreal that takes place after the sun goes down and then finishes with sipping an ice-cold beer(s) in the Biergarten. My type of run.
The race starts at 8:30 p.m., this Friday the 13th in the Old Port. And every step of the way is a mini party. The streets are lit up with neon lights, there are live DJ's along the way to keep your feet moving, and every runner is equipped with a headlamp to keep you nice and disoriented.
Runners can choose between the 5km or 10km course that starts near the Science Center and wraps around the St. Laurence River. The route is flat and fast and the skyline at night is pretty spectacular so don't expect a hardcore workout. This is all — well mostly — in the name of fun. And it's a super unique way to race through the city.
And after runners have completed the course, there will be an awesome post-race after-party to make it all worthwhile, complete with drinks, snacks, and music.
The race is part of a series happening in cities across Canada. Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver are also taking part. But Montreal for one loves the neon-lit night runs. The first edition had nearly 1600 runners involved, which placed it among the biggest races of the year.

Unfortunately, online registration is already closed. If you want to take part you have to register in person at the race kit pickup times which are September 11 and 12, from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at 1005 Marche Central. Registration costs are $75 and you get a race swag bag that includes an Energizer LED Headlamp, a run tee, a beer ticket, and a post-race snack.
Sorry, you do have to be 18+ to take part.

You can walk or run either of the 5km or 10km portions, but the races must be finished in 60 and 90 minutes, respectively. So the 10km route may be difficult to achieve if you're only walking.
It is mandatory to wear the headlamp provided and it's even recommended to wear additional safety lighting like flashers, or glo-sticks. This is a race for fun. Why not just go all out as a lit-up beacon?
Some people take the race pretty seriously. But it's not all about asserting your athletic dominance, it's about getting together for a little fitness and fun at the end of the weekl.
