This Montreal Church Set Up A "Millennial Nativity Scene" And Some People Are Appalled

The holiday season often yields surprising design and decorating trends.

As companies compete for the attention of consumers with flashy sales and Christmassy aesthtics, they can often spur frivolous new trends for the holiday season.

TL;DR St Joseph's Oratory in Montreal has put up a "hipster nativity scene" to mixed reactions from the public.

Trends also erupt from boredom with the predictable scenes and colours of Christmas. Thay may be why, this year, alternatively-coloured trees and over-saturated decoratons are among the most popular themes.

Alternative Christmas displays have, suprisingly, also reached churches.

Montreal's famous St Joseph's Oratory, for example, has this year set up an exhibit dedicated to nativity scenes from cultures around the globe, according to Global News.

But one scene, in particular, has caught the attention of visitors and the Internet: a hipster-themed nativity like this one available at

The scene reimagines the birth of Jesus with Millenial participants. Joseph and Mary take a selfie with their child; the three kings arrive on segways with gifts from Amazon; and the famous shed features all-organic beef and solar panels on its roof.

While the Millenial nativity scene undoubtedly adds some levity to St-Jospeh's museum, some were not amused.

Nativity scene at St. Joseph's? This is not an early April Fool's joke?
This to me is blasphemy!! Looks like some Oratory employee is trying some political correct BS..

The scene also pokes perhaps unwarranted fun at Millenial culture.

Mary, for example, with her bra exposed and lips pursed, is clearly meant to be the image of impropriety. The three dandy kings also appear to poke fun at Millenial masculinity.

What do you think of the "Millenial" nativity scene? Does it belong at St-Joseph's?
