- The annual Gage Park skating rink in Brampton, Ontario winds through festive holiday lights and decorations.
- The rink is totally worth the road trip from Montreal.
It's getting to be that time. The double-edged sword time of never wanting the winter temperatures to hit below freezing and yet wanting all those winter activities that need freezing weather.
And that includes ice skating. You don't need to leave Quebec to be able to strap on some skates, but if you feel like a road trip and want to practice your Disney on Ice skills, then head over to Gage Park in Brampton, Ontario.
The park is used year-round and hosts most of the city's outdoor events. But come winter, this park turns into a brightly lit mini ice skating wonderland. The jogging path is turned into an ice rink and takes you on a scenic tour through the park.
It's postcard-pretty during the day, but at night the park really shows its holiday side. The park is lit up in decorations as part of the Brampton Tree Lighting celebration. There are DJs spinning while you skate, outdoor firepits to warm up in front of, and food trucks for when you want to take a break.
It's a five-hour drive outside of Montreal, so it's no small trek, but if you're planning a weekend getaway to Toronto, it's only 30 minutes out of your way.
The gazebo in the middle of the park is the perfect place to snap a few shots. Lit up with hundreds of lights and a huge Christmas tree, the gazebo gives off that cozy, small-town Stars Hollow feel.
The Gage Park trail stays open late so you can skate under the stars while winding through trees and paths that show off the enchanting holiday decor of the city.
Skate rentals (or sharpening if you have your own) are available during the season for just $10 per adult ($8 for sharpening). If you're a new skater, or especially clumsy, they also offer helmets for free.
Depending on the weather, the ice rink usually opens up to the public mid-December since temperatures need to hit that awful below-freezing mark in order to maintain the ice.
