I'm someone who adores travelling but absolutely despises connecting flights. We're lucky enough to have some amazing direct flights from Montreal to some pretty underrated European destinations.
Flying direct makes travelling a lot easier and it cuts down your travel time significantly. Who wants a 10-hour layover where you're forced to stay in a boring airport? No one. That's why travel junkies usually search the web for good deals on a direct flight. And, if you're living in Montreal, you have a ton of them to pick from.
For those of you who have yet to travel to Europe, these spots will not only impress you with their gorgeous cityscapes, but you're also sure to fall in love with the food and the culture.
Yes, you can fly direct to Paris, but let's be real, the city is expensive and overrated, so why not venture out to Bordeaux or maybe Lyon? Or, you can even check out what life is like in Geneva or Bucharest.
Europe is filled with breathtaking cities that will blow your mind and leave you wondering why you hadn't visited them earlier.
Note that flight times and availability change with the seasons, so be sure to plan ahead!
Bordeaux, France
Bordeaux is at the centre of what is known as a wine-growing region, so if you're prepping for a trip here, get ready to do some drinking!
This port city in the southwest of France has an abundance of things to see including the Gothic Cathรฉdrale Saint-Andrรฉ, notable museums, and 18th- and 19th-century mansions, all of which will impress even the most experienced traveller.
There are as many as eight direct flights to Bordeaux from Montreal per week, which means you have plenty of opportunities to find a flight that works with your schedule!
Bucharest, Romania
On average, three flights a week leave from Montreal directly to Bucharest.
The Romanian capital is littered with iconic landmarks, including the massive, communist-era government building, Palatul Parlamentului, and the tiny Eastern Orthodox Stavropoleos Church.
There is also the historic Lipscani district that is home to some fantastic bars and clubs, in case you're looking to party.
Frankfurt, Germany
With 14 flights leaving weekly, Frankfurt is an ideal escape for any Montrealer.
This financial hub, home to the European Central Bank, has a lot to offer. Frankfurt is the birthplace of famous writer Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, and his former home has been turned into a stunning museum called the Goethe House Museum.
Sadly, much of the city was damaged during World War II and had to be rebuilt. After the reconstruction of the Old Town was finished, the Rรถmerberg Christmas Market became an annual tradition.
Geneva, Switzerland
There is an exquisite beauty throughout Switzerland, and the city of Geneva is no exception.
Geneva is super easy to get to from Montreal, with as many as seven direct flights leaving every week. This is a destination that Montreal locals should all experience at least once in their lifetimes.
From the beauty of Lake Geneva to the impressive Alps and Jura Mountains that surround the city, Geneva is home to some dramatic and exceptional views.
Both the United Nations and the Red Cross have their headquarters in this city. Geneva is a global hub for diplomacy and banking, but has something for everyone, especially if you love Swiss cuisine.
Lyon, France
Even some French people seem to forget that the country extends beyond Paris. With as many as 10 direct flights leaving every week, it's easy for us Montreal locals to experience all that Lyon has to offer.
Lyon is a city that has an abundance of history dating back 2,000 years. From the Roman Amphithรฉรขtre Des Trois Gaules to the Medieval and Renaissance architecture in Vieux Lyon, there's a ton of stuff to check out.
There are even covered passageways between buildings that connect to Vieux Lyon and La Croix-Rousse hill, which is pretty awesome โ especially for tourists!
Malaga, Spain
This port city has three direct flights weekly leaving our city, which makes planning a trip there pretty simple.
In addition to gorgeous beaches, one of the most visited spots is the soaring Renaissance cathedral, which earned itself the nickname La Manquita, which means one-armed lady as one of its towers was left unfinished.
Marseille, France
As I mentioned, there is a lot more to France than just Paris and with eight direct flights leaving every week from Montreal in the summer, you can experience Marseille for yourself.
This port city has been a crossroads for both trade and immigration since the Greeks founded it in 600 B.C.
In the heart of the city lies the Old Port where fishmongers sell their products along the quay. There are also a lot of other things to see throughout the city including the Basilique Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde, a Romanesque-Byzantine church.
Although this is a very old city, there are many modern landmarks, including Le Corbusierโs influential Citรฉ Radieuse complex as well as the Zaha Hadidโs CMA CGM Tower.
Nantes, France
This amazing city located on the Loire River of Western France is a place that is as rich in history as it is in dessert options.
Nantes is home to the restored medieval Chรขteau des Ducs de Bretagne, where the Dukes of Brittany once lived, which has now been turned into a local history museum with multimedia exhibits. It also includes a walkway atop its fortified barricades.
With three flights leaving from Montreal to Nantes weekly, this is a great spot to discover if you are someone who hates connecting flights.

Toulouse, France
Every week, four direct flights leave Montreal and head to Toulouse, France, and one of these days, you can be on one of those planes.
Toulouse sits near the Spanish border and is known as La Ville Rose, which translates to The Pink City. It earned this name due to the terracotta bricks that are used in the construction of many of the buildings.
The 17th-century Canal du Midi connects the Garonne to the Mediterranean Sea and visitors and locals can travel along it by foot, boat, or bike!
