Warning: Measles Outbreak In Montreal, Hundreds Of People Potentially Exposed

Public health officials in the city of Montreal are warning of a potential measles outbreak in the West Island. They are currently attempting to track Montrealers who were in six different locations this week where they may have been exposed.

Dr. Mylene Drouin, director of public health in Montreal estimates that as many as 200 people could be exposed to the disease, according to the CBC. It's assumed that people could've been contaminated over a three day period on May 11th, 12th, and 14th

The incident has been labelled an outbreak, according to the Montreal Gazette. The Montreal Public Health Department has also issued a statement and posted relevant information on its website.

Measles is one of the world's most contagious viruses and could be incredibly dangerous if young children are exposed to it. One of the best ways to combat the spread of measles is to vaccinate your children against the virus as soon as possible.

Residents of the West Island and Ville St-Laurent in Montreal should be vigilant and practice proper hygiene and preventative measures.

The six locations are as follows:

  • Des Sources High School (2900 rue Lake)
  • Tim Hortons (3760 boulevard des Sources)
  • Royal Bank (4440 boulevard des Sources)
  • Manju Beauty (3637 boulevard des Sources)
  • The Courtyard Mariott Hotel (7000 Place Robert-Joncas)
  • Les Aventuriers Daycare (196 rue Bates)

A few days ago, we warned of a potential measles exposure on Air Canada flights coming out of Toronto. Montreal health officials also confirmed two other cases this week.

This news means that there are now seven reported measles cases in Montreal. According to the public health minister, this is the first time in 2019 that this virus has been spread from one person to another.

If you've been to any of these areas, make sure to consult with a clinic or your family doctor to see if you've been exposed or not.
