Woman Stabbed On Montreal Metro Car Causing Major Shut Down On STM Green Line

If you were wondering WTF was going on last night...
Woman Stabbed On Montreal Metro Car Causing Major Shut Down On STM Green Line
  • A woman was attacked with a sharp object last night on a Montreal STM Green line metro car.
  • The attack caused a delay on the metro line that lasted nearly 2 hours.
  • The attacker fled the scene at l'Assomption metro station, though police did make an arrest.

If you were one of the many commuters that were stuck on the STM's Green line last night, we've now actually got an explanation for the extended delay.

Unfortunately, as many likely expected, it's not great news, as is usually the case when it comes to delays or shutdowns on our metro lines.

Last night, just before 5 p.m., an emergency brake was pulled, causing the train to stop. The STM only makes twitter announcements for delays of 10 minutes or more, so after 10 minutes they sent out an initial tweet indicating that service would resume shortly.

However, the emergency brake was not pulled by accident, as is often the case, and it quickly became clear that the incident was going to cause a much longer delay than initially expected.

The tweets below show that the STM originally tweeted at 4:45 p.m. indicating that service was expected to resume within 5 minutes, at 4:50 p.m.

However, it's clear that as the situation came to light, the shutdown was going to take much longer than initially indicated.

According to the SPVM, the woman, who was in her 70s, was attacked by a man with a sharp object. The man then fled the scene at l'Assomption metro station.

The initial call to police was made at about 4:30 p.m., around the same time that the emergency brake was pulled.

By 6 p.m., the STM was indicating that service would not resume until 7 p.m., as emergency services were now intervening.

Finally, just before 7 p.m., service slowly resumed for the Green line in both directions.

The woman who was stabbed was taken to hospital and treated for her upper body injuries, and thankfully she is expected to make a full recovery.

A man was also arrested near the scene of the crime shortly after the incident.

We will update this space with any new and pertinent information as it comes to light.

And in the future, know that while delays on the metro are annoying, it's a public service and therefore inherently at the whims of the public.

The STM works hard to keep us moving and incidents like this, though terrible, are inevitable, so let's all try to see the bigger picture, hop on a bus, and be grateful you're on your way.
