We've all longed for bygone days when you could easily watch a movie outdoors at a drive-in or a local outdoor theatre. There's something singular about the experience of watching a film under the stars that a cinema can't replicate.

Since there are no good summer movies in the theatres nowadays and since outdoor movie theatres are a thing of the past, some local Montrealers took it upon themselves to bring us one of the best summer experiences ever. Enter Film Noir au Canal

Film Noir au Canal is a project that began in 2015. On the shores of the Lachine Canal, every Sunday until mid-August, Film Noir au Canal screens a classic film from the Hollywood vaults!

For their first screening of the year, on Sunday, July 14th, Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho will be playing on the big screen under the stars.

Film Noir au Canal screens mainly, well, film noir. For those of you uninitiated, film noir is a genre that was popular in the 40s and 50s that had a dark, pessimistic tone, often focused around crime and detective stories.

The festival has been screening the best film noir movies since summer 2015. Film Noir au Canal is a free festival that relies on donations and sponsoring to operate. They've been a huge success ever since their first screening, attracting hundreds of movie fans every year.

This Sud-Ouest film festival takes place at St-Patrick Square along the Lachine Canal every Sunday from July 14th to August 18th, 2019.

In the spirit of the film noir genre, Film Noir au Canal is keeping their programming a secret until the day after each screening. Up first, Hitchcock's classic psychological thriller, Psycho, one of the most storied films of a generation.

You might not only see classic Hollywood films at the festival! Sometimes, you might catch one of your favourite modern classics. Last year, the festival closed with David Lynch's masterpiece, Mulholland Drive.

There will also be food trucks, popcorn stands, and ice cream! Before each screening, there will be a musical performance. Make sure to bring your own chairs and blankets since St-Patrick Square is a grassy park.

Film Noir au Canal starts this week and is expected to attract a huge turnout! If you miss this week, don't worry, the festival is on-going every Sunday until August!
