This year, Montrealers are making a big splash at the 86th Academy Awards (AKA, the Oscars) on March 2nd. Nominated for awards such as Best Picture, Best Original Score and everything in between, our local creative geniuses are making us proud!

Jean-Marc Vallee - The Dallas Buyers Club
Although Vallee's film did not earn him a Best Director nod, it seems to have hit the mark on everything else: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Original Screenplay, Best Makeup and Hairstyling and Best Film Editing. This honor makes Vallee the first Quebec filmmaker ever nominated for a Best Picture award.

Chris Lawrence - Gravity
The London native is nominated for Best Visual Effects for his incredibly work on the film Gravity. Lawrence heads the Montreal branch of the visual effects firm Framestore; he's quick to add in most interviews that a whole team of people at Framestore worked tirelessly on this project with him. Most experts - online experts that is - have been praising the visual effects created for this film; their ingenious use of CGI has the whole industry talking.
Martin Pensa - The Dallas Buyers Club
Montreal's Martin Pensa has been nominated for Best Film Editing for his work on The Dallas Buyers Club along with an unknown partner named John Mac McMurphy. Rumors are spreading that McMurphy is actually a pseudonym for director Jean-Marc Vallee, but this has yet to be confirmed. They first collaborated together on Vallee's acclaimed film Cafe de Flore. Pensa began his career in Montreal, dubbing the performances of actors such as Elijah Wood and Macaulay Culkin into French. We can't wait to see him accept this award on Sunday night!
The Lady In Number 6: Music Saved My Life
This incredible film has been nominated for Best Documentary Short and the team behind it includes quite a few Montrealers; director of photography Kieran Crilly, editor Carl Freed, producer Frederic Bohbot and composer Luc St-Pierre. However, all eyes are on director Malcolm Clarke, a Montreal native. Initially, he didn't want to make another documentary focused on the Holocaust, but after spending about an hour in the company of 110-year-old Alice Herz-Sommer, he knew that he just had to.
Mrs. Herz-Sommer, believed to be the world's oldest Holocaust survivor, passed away on February 23rd. We hope Clarke and his team take the Oscar home, in her memory.
Owen Pallett & William Butler - Her
Arcade Fire's William Butler and Owen Pallett, a frequent collaborator, are nominated for their work on Spike Jonze's Her for Best Original Score. The film is also nominated for Best Picture and early predictions are leaning toward Pallett and Butler nabbing this one! Even if you never watch awards shows... guys, it's Arcade Fire! Let's show them some support.
Tibor Madjar
Nineteen scientific and technical achievements were awarded by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which also hands out the Oscars, on Saturday, February 15th. Montrealer Tibor Madjar (and his team) was given a Technical Achievement Award by the Academy for his work on the concept and design of Mudbox software. He was thrilled to have won and attended the ceremony with his wife and two children.

Scientific and Engineering Award
The gala, dubbed 'Oscars for nerds' by many fans, took place at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Kristen Bell, of Veronica Mars fame, and Michael B. Jordan, of Fruitvale Station, handed out the awards to the lucky winners.
