Montreal's Île Sainte-Hélène To Change Its Name To "Île De La Fête"?

Île Sainte-Hélène, home of weekly and annual party-festivals like Piknic Electroniq, Osheaga, Heavy Montreal, and many more, is a hub of activity throughout the year. The metro-able island is so exciting year-round, that some Montrealers believe a name change is in order, to reflect the island's use in general entertainment.

Instead of being known as Île Sainte-Hélène, Thomas Montgomery of Montreal believes the area should be renamed Île de la Fête, or, in English, Party Island. To make the change happen, Montgomery made a petition, one he hopes to present to the Commission de toponymie du Québec.

Why make the change? Well, Montgomery believes a more exciting and descriptive title like "Party Island" would create a more fun and positive image in the mind's of tourists and Montrealers alike.

If the switch is to be made, Montgomery's petition also asks that the metro station's name also be changed to Station de l’Île de la Fête.

To support the Île Sainte-Hélène name change, head over to the online petition and sign your name. Apparently only 100 signatures in total are "needed" but we're sure more is always better when it comes to appealing to a provincial office, so do add your name even if it's past the 100 mark.

Changing Île Sainte-Hélène to become Île de la Fête/Party Island doesn't seem like the most lucrative of endeavours, in all honesty. No matter what the area is known as, people will go to the major festivals and events the island hosts. Still, Île de la Fête does have a more youthful ring to it, and basically sounds more fun, though I'm not sure if I'd refer to it as Party Island...'cuz it sounds a little douchey-silly.
