Montreal's Place Jacques Cartier Is Transforming Into A Massive Free Winter Wonderland This Month

As any Montrealer knows, Montreal's Place Jacques Cartier and the Old Port always has amazing Christmas set-ups that really get you in the holiday mood and this year is no different! In fact, the whole area is getting transformed into a beautiful holiday wonderland this year thanks to Merry Montreal, and we could not be more excited.

This is actually the sixth (!!) year that Merry Montreal is putting on this event and the schedule is packed with fun events that are sure to top last years'.  From the many live shows to the winter activities - there really is something for everyone. Plus, most important detail - it's all FREE!

Called the Nordic Square, Merry Montreal's holiday fest will be on from December 20–30, on Thursday to Sunday on Jacques-Cartier Square. This is literally the cutest and most festive spot in the city... you can beat the cold with an outdoor fire, mulled wine, choirs, public art installations and shimmering lights. Literally, if you're looking for something festively Instagrammable... well, stop your search. You've found your spot!

The best part about the Nordic Square, though, is the super fun themed nights they put on. For example, on December 28, the Nordic Square will be hosting a Swiss Night with a live Cor des Alpes (AKA alphorn) performance! If you’ve never experienced this instrument live… well, get ready to be blown away.

Put that together with fun installations like a giant game of Jenga which you can play with your friends (CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!), Zumba sessions, reflecting crystal art sculptures and an artistic red bear sculpture (among others!) sure to turn your feed into pure fire and you’ve got a recipe for one seriously fun time!

Oh, and if you’re a fan of good food, then there’s even better news for you: you’ll be able to feast on some good old pouding chômeur and some delicious tourtière!

The Nordic Square is open Thursday and Friday from 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 PM - 9:00 PM, all the way until December 30.

This time of year is so magical and Merry Montreal really does an amazing job of creating an awesome event every year that really captures that spirit - and it's all for free! See you all there!

Here's What's Open & What's Closed On Labour Day In Montreal

There are still a ton of things to do this Monday holiday!
  • Here's a short list of what's open and what's closed on Labour Day in Montreal.
  • If you're heading out, make sure to call ahead to your destination to inquire about reduced hours.

Yes, it's a long weekend! Three uninterrupted days to relax, have fun, and not think for two seconds about things like school or work, or other responsibilities until Tuesday morning. Not to be too depressing but it will be six weeks before we get another official long weekend.

But let's focus on the positive! This is usually one of the summer weekends that people are trying to pack in their last days of camping or chalet time. But if you're planning to stay in the city it's good to know what's open and what's closed so you can plan out your Labour Day weekend.

Which is the city's most beautiful pothole?

What we love about potholes here at MTL Blog is that they provide us with an endless number of stories to share. Readers are constantly sending us photos of their favourite holes in the road. Not only that but we've become friends with many potholes around the city.

We see them every day doing their very best to make us late to work and to destroy our wheels so it's about time we give them some love!

A video shared with MTLBlog by Instagram user @21blocks this afternoon shows a massive car fire two blocks from Lionel-Groulx metro station at the Petro-Canada gas station in the Montreal neighbourhood of St-Henri.

Details of the fire are few, but it's clear several police vehicles were on scene.
