Love it or hate it, Schwartz's Deli is a Montreal institution. Montrealers and tourists alike tout the 86 year old delicatessen as the best smoked meat spot in the entire city. One website has done one better, claiming Schwartz's is actually the best deli in all of North America., in an effort to rank the continents best pastrami, smoked meat, and corned beef sandwich eateries, ranked 10 different delis from all across North America. Ranking in at number one was none other than Schwartz's, praised for its infamous blend of spices, 10-day marinating process, and daily smoking of meat.

Some will wholeheartedly agree with Schwartz's ranking as the #1 deli in North America. I, on the other hand, do not. I could rant about my distaste for Schwartz's (and have, read it here) but to be brief, I just think the deli's reputation has eclipsed the actual quality of food and service, as people automatically believe Schwart's is the best smoked meat spot in Montreal simply because everyone says so.

Lester's Deli also made the list, ranking in at #6. How Lester's ranked so much lower than Schwartz's makes no sense to me, as does the fact that other and arguably superior  Montreal delis didn't make the list. Just my humble opinion, one many will say is entirely false. Let the debate begin.

To see who Schwartz's beat out, here are the other ten delis on the ShalomLife's list of North America's best delicatessens.
