In honour of Robert Bourassa, premier of Quebec from 1970-1976 and a second time from 1985-1994, a section of University street in downtown Montreal will be renamed "Robert-Bourassa Boulevard." Denis Coderre made the announcement, confirming the rumoured change, reports Radio-Canada.

Robert-Bourassa Boulevard will not be taking over the entirety of University street, as only a portion will be renamed. University, from Sherbrooke street to the Bonaventure Expressway (map), is the section to be renamed.

Some political irony to note is that Robert-Bourassa Boulevard will now intersect with René-Lévesque, two premiers who weren't always so chummy.

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre commented the name-switch was made to honour a major player in Quebec's political history. The mayor noted that while many may not have agreed with Bourassa's politics, his impact on the province cannot be denied.
