1. 28 Days Later (2002)

With “Be thankful for everything, soon there will be nothing” as a tagline, this zombie film mixes science fiction elements by having a post-apocalyptic setting with good old fashioned zombies. Masterful writing and acting make it one of a kind… except for its sequel '28 Weeks Later, 'which I also recommend.

2. Funny Games (2007)

What makes this remake by Michael Haneke so terrifying is the simplicity of its plot. “Oh hello, can I borrow some eggs? I’m just your friendly neighbor.” NOT.

3. Rosemary’s Baby (1968)

This horror film can be scary to just about anybody, but more specifically to the ladies. Being pregnant sounds terrifying enough, but when your baby-daddy is Satan himself? No thank you.

4. Chained (2012)

Words cannot describe the horror of this scenario. If you’re looking for a movie that will make you think, “Thank god that ain’t me!” then this film’s for you.

5. Haute Tension (High Tension) (2003)

This French horror film stands out for its unpredictable storyline, which leads you to believe one thing and then rips the carpet for under your feet.

6. The Shining (1980)

This film cannot be ignored. With a director like Stanley Kubrick, a story by Stephen King, and Jack Nicholson in the title role, this movie has scared so many people that there are conspiracy theories about its making and the meaning of the film.

7. [rec] (2007)

Just like its American counterpart “Quarantine”, [rec] takes place mostly in one building that is put on lockdown when a virus is determined to be giving people rabies-like symptoms. I don’t know what it is about its setting in Spain that makes this version much more bone-chilling.

8. Martyrs (2008)

Do not watch this unless you are prepared to witness one of the darkest parts of humanity. “Martyrs” is demented and if you’re into that then you will love it.

9. The Descent (2005)

This British film begins the way many horror movies do, with six friends deciding to go on a crazy adventure. The events that ensue were not exactly part of their plan…

10. The Devil’s Rejects (2005)

I watched this when I was way too young, and have not been the same since. It is the sequel to “House of 1000 Corpses” and in my humble opinion is far spookier. It centers on a family of wandering psychopaths as they go and have what they consider “a good time”.
