TL;DRย The Government of Canada is constantly updating their "travel advisories" page to inform Canadians, here are some of the most recent updates to the advisories list.ย 

Most areas of the world are safe to visit,ย if you exerciseย common sense and stay out of objectively dangerousย situations, that is. However, it does help to check the travel advisories before leaving as some popular travel destinations are on high alert.

Listed below are some of the major advisories that were updated in the last few days.

In recent news, we have heard of violent protests and sociopolitical tensions rising in Haiti. As a result, a travel advisory has been in effect since the end of July. Specific regions have been updated to be on an "avoid non-essential travel" alert.

Jamaica has been on the "high degree of caution" list since mid-October due to the high level of violent crime and a state of emergency in one of the country's northern regions. I was sad to hear this because Jamaica is one of my favorite destinations. I've been there twice, and I've never had any issues and always felt safe and welcomed by the warm-hearted locals. However, crime-related violence is a real issue in the country. But as a tourist, if you "exercise a degree of caution" you should be just fine.

China has been on this list of travel advisories since mid-summer. Alerts are currently in effect due to the occurrence of isolated acts of violence, including bombings and protests.

The government of Canada warns people travelling to Ecuador to excercise a high degree of caution due to high levels of crime and a high risk of natural disasters. Also, more severe "avoid all travel" advisories are in effect for certain regions of Ecuador, so it's best to check which ones and avoid going to those areas entirely.

Avoid non-essential travel

Nicaragua, the unspoiled surfer's paradise of central America, has been added to the list of travel advisories due to civil unrest, which has been occurring throughout the country since April 2018.

The beautiful nation of Myanmar is a popular tourist destination for those travelling through Southeast Asia. The Canadian government warns citizens to excercise caution when travelling to this country due to the unsettled political situation and the possibility of civil unrest. Moreover, Travel Canada warns that politically motivated violence can occur at any time, including in areas frequented by tourists.

Philippines

Exercise a high degree of caution

The beaches of the Philippines are a veritable paradise, and many people travel there for their yearly tropical vacation. The Canadian government warns to travel to the Philippines with caution due to the threat of terrorism and the high level of crime. In addition, several "avoid all travel" regional advisories are in effect. If you're planning on visiting the Philippines, be sure to check those out before you jet off.

This is probably the last country you would assume to find on this list. However, the government of Canada is currently advising visitors to excercise caution in the Netherlands due to a current elevated threat of terrorism. However, no specific regional advisories are in effect.
