Losing your virginity is either fantasized as being a magical and romantic moment, or just ends up being a very sloppy (and probably a little awkward) affair. Elizabeth Raine, a 27-year-old medical student wants neither situation and is online-auctioning off her virginity for enough money to pay for med school tuition.
Describing herself as "a sensually stunning, highly educated, and charismatic American woman" Raine (not her real name) apparently has no warm and fuzzy feelings about her virginity. She actually said her "virginity has absolutely no meaning" and think she may as well make a few bucks out of it.
What already comes out as strange is the fact that Raine, in her late twenties and seemingly attractive, is a virgin at all. Raine does delve into this, pointing out four reasons why she hasn't had full on intercourse, all of which make sense, but aren't THAT convincing.
The whole truth and reasoning behind Raine's decision notwithstanding, is this even ethical? Well, maybe not entirely, but it certainly isn't the first virginity auction. In 2009 Natalie Dylan tried to sell her virginity for $3.9 million, although the deal fell through.
Will Raine's auction have the same fate? She doesn't think so, saying that “The difference between my auction and Natalie Dylan’s...is I’m not interested in publicity"she told a DailyDot reporter who only found out about Raine through her self-published press release. Raine is using a pseudonym and won't show her face, but contacting media seems a little contradictory.
A desire for attention, morality, and a looming air of prostitution make the whole thing strange and a bit creepy, but what it all boils down to for Raine (apparently) is the cash. “Money is money,” Raine says, and you can't argue with that. Plus, we all know how effing expensive school can be.
