Breaking: Downtown Montreal Shooting, Suspect On The Loose

Police are on the scene and investigating.

Breaking News.

A local man and employee of an upscale boutique in downtown Montreal was shot this morning.

Police say the Giorgio Gruppo Roma employee was shot in the lower back, in broad daylight around 11:45 this morning.

Police are still on the scene at Peel St between St. Catherine St and de Maisonneuve Boulevard W., the suspect has fled the scene on foot.

Montreal Police are still investigating, and looking for the suspect who has not been caught yet.

Montreal Police say the shooter was wearing a mask and bright-coloured vest, similar to that of a construction worker.

The assailant dropped his gun on the sidewalk, which appears to be a Remington 870 shotgun.

The same store was also the subject of arson around this time last year.

Police say the victim, a man in his sixties, is in stable condition and his injuries are not life-threatening. While reports from global news claim the main is in critical condition.

The Montreal Police refuse to share any further details at this time.

Nina Fainman-Adelman, a masters student at McGill University, snapped the picture of the shotgun on the ground after leaving her criminology class.

"I assumed it was fake," she said. "I was so close to picking it up because I thought it was a toy or part of a prank video or something like that. I'm so glad I didn't."

"There were just people walking by and then suddenly I turned around, and there was an entire police force with guns, and someone grabbed me and told me to go." CBC.

The man who was shot has been identified as store owner Tony Elian. He is in stable condition and police do not fear for his life.

Gang-related violence was suspected in the 2017 arson case when a Molotov cocktail was used to burn down Giorgio Gruppo Roma. He noted that Vito Rizzuto and Ducharme Joseph were both clients. It remains to be seen if there is any connection to yesterday's shooting incident.

We will continue to update this as more information comes out.
