***UPDATE: As of 8:10 am the tsunami warning has been cancelled***
This morning a 8.2 magnitude earthquake (downgraded to 7.9) has hit the Gulf of Alaska.
The earthquake hit at about 1:31 am.
There is now a tsunami warning in effect for entire BC coast!
If you are in a #tsunami warning area, move out of the water, off the beach & away from harbors, marinas, breakwaters, bays & inlets. Follow instructions from your local emergency officials because they may have more detailed or specific information for your location.— Emergency Info BC (@EmergencyInfoBC)
The tsunami warning has been issued for the Northeast Vancouver Island Coast, as well as the Central Coast. People are being asked to move to higher ground.
It is believed that the waves caused by the tsunami will impact low lying areas under 20 metres.
In Alaska people are being told to move to at least 34 meters above seas level because the waves are expected to be even higher.
