Landlords Say That Security Deposits Are Now Allowed In Quebec Under Certain Conditions

Many Quebec landlords have long been trying to make security deposits legal in Quebec. They have claimed that deposits would not only protect themselves but also give another option to renters who were previously denied a lease.
Well, on Wednesday, the Corporation des propriétaires immobiliers du Québec (CORPIQ) announced that the Régie du logement has opted to allow the practice under certain conditions.
With a security deposit as a financial cushion, a lot of unnecessary stress for landlords and tenants could have been avoided.

The CORPIQ says that landlords can now offer their future tenants three choices to protect themselves against possible losses: find a roommate, find an endorser, or give a security deposit.
In this way, the CORPIQ says it hopes to facilitate access to rental units and to make tenants aware of the importance of taking care of the premises.
However, the corporation makes clear that "it is still forbidden to require as a condition of the lease any amount that can be kept by the landlord."
This announcement only concerns future leases and has no impact on current leases.
