Montreal firefighters are on the scene of a four-alarm fire on the corners of rue Bishop and boulevard Maisonneuve in downtown Montreal.

It is possible that officials will cut electricty to the area.

Firefighters are additionally asking people to avoid the area.

The cause and extent of the fire are unclear.

UPDATE: Firefighters have completed their intervention

Photos and videos shared with MTL Blog show a cloud of black smoke rising above the city.

Eyewitness Gaëlle Séréna Kouyoumdjian tells MTL Blog that she believes that the fire started in restaurant, though that is unconfirmed.

Kouyoumdjian lives two buildings down from the building that caught fire. She feared the fire would spread so gathered her essentials and evacuated her home.

Officials had cut electricity, preventing residents from getting into the electric-powered entrance to her building.

We will update this article with more information as it becomes available.

If you are at a safe distance, send photos and videos of the smoke to @MTLBlog on Twitter and Instagram.

Stay tuned.
