Montreal is a summer paradise. Because the city suffers such brutal winters and capricious springs, Montrealers know how to take advantage of the fleeting warm season. Countless events and venues pop-up between May and June as the weather finally begins to turn.
Take for example the multiple outdoor movie theatres that have already released their summer programming. Perhaps most exciting, however, are the ephemeral restaurants designed specifically for the summer months.
Among these, the Canal Lounge is probably the most popular. The bar opens each year on a long boat behind the Atwater Market on the Lachine Canal between the neighborhoods of St-Henri and Point St-Charles.
A restaurant spokesperson has confirmed to MTLBlog that it is set to open on May 21st for the 2019 season. The date is now also posted on the Canal Lounge website.
"The first of its kind in Montreal," the Lounge "is the perfect spot to get in the nautical spirit for a 5 à 7 or a romantic night out with friends enjoying cocktails and snacks. Step inside and enjoy the [relaxing] atmosphere during sunset with some great lounge music," its website states.
Flowers, plants, and ambient lighting complete the cool, summery feel of the bar. It provides a popular backdrop for Montrealers' Instagram feeds. Lounge patrons can enjoy views of the bustling Lachine Canal. The exterior seats on its bow and stern are especially exciting.
The Canal Lounge serves dozens of drinks, including beer, wine, and classic as well as nautical-themed cocktails. Lights snacks, appetizers, and dessert are also available on the menu.
The bar is also perfectly situated for a day full of fun summer activities. Bike along the Lachine Canal or do some shopping at the Atwater Market before completing your day with a drink as dusk falls over the Montreal South West.
The Lounge does not take reservations and groups of more than ten people are not permitted.
