• A lockdown at a school in the Eastern Townships ended after the arrest of two students.
  • The Sûreté du Québec assures that all students, faculty, and staff at the school are safe.

Early this morning, Massey-Vanier Secondary School was under lockdown due to an undisclosed security risk. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) arrested two students in connection to the lockdown. Teachers and students are still inside the school and the SQ assures the public that the students at Massey-Vanier are safe.


UPDATE: As of 11:40, the SQ says 3 people have been arrested.


EARLIER: Parents were alerted as soon as the lockdown began at around 10 a.m. but were advised to not go to the school. Still, a small clutch of parents waited outside the school despite warnings to not go. The SQ arrested two students, including one who was found off school property.

The school lifted its lockdown at around 11:22 a.m.

The situation is tense but no one is hurt or in any danger, assures the Val-des-Cerfs School Board and the SQ. Provincial police are currently on scene conducting an investigation.

The school is located in the small town of Cowansville, about an hour or so outside of Montreal in the Eastern Townships. 

There are no further details that have been released by the school board or by the SQ. We'll update you with more details as they are released. 

The Val-des-Cerfs School Board alerted the public around an hour ago on their Facebook page. 

The ongoing SQ investigation suggests that students and teachers are in no danger.


Translation: Police deployment to Cowansville: For the moment, the investigation in a secondary school on rue Mercier does not suggest a direct threat to the safety of people on the site. The investigation is still in progress.


The ages or names of the arrested individuals have not been disclosed. 

In a subsequent post on Facebook announcing the end of the lockdown, the school board stated that professional services will be available to the students and staff who need them.

"The rest of the day will follow the usual schedule. However, parents who wish to pick up their child may go to gates 24 and 25 without entering the school," the post concluded.

The SQ provided an update at 11:40 stating that three individuals have been arrested but none were in possession of firearms at the time of their arrest.
