Vegan diets are becoming not only more popular, but also more critically important. Studies show that eliminating meat consumption is the single best way to reduce one's carbon footprint. The emphasis in the new Canadian Food Guide on alternative, plant-based proteins has only further fueled the explosion of meatless products in Canada.
From Beyond Meat-brand options at popular chains, to the opening of vegan pubs, meatless and dairy-free products have proliferated in recent months. Vegan desserts are the next frontier. Though there have always been vegan treats, vegans often miss out on summertime favourites.
One new Montreal enterprise seeks to fill that void. SWIRL, a new ice cream parlor in the Plateau Mont-Royal, serves only 100% soft-serve.
The "minimal shop [creates] dairy-free soft serve from scratch," according to its Facebook page.
According to Narcity Québec, SWIRL makes use of coconut to achieve the texture of soft serve. Classic ingredients like vanilla, hazelnut, and dark chocolate are common additions.
Other flavours vary by day according to the availability of certain products, Narcity continues. Last week, for instance, SWIRL made use of fresh lemons to produce a sorbet without artificial colouring.
After an immensely successful soft opening, SWIRL began its regular schedule on Wednesday, June 12th. It is open Wednesday to Sunday between 1 PM and 9 PM, according to its rudimentary website.
SWIRL so far has a 4.8/5 star rating on Google Reviews. "I went to Cremerie SWIRL for the first time and immediately loved their ice cream! I tried their dark chocolate and hazelnut ice cream and it was DE.LI.CIOUS!" wrote one reviewer.
"I SWIRL when I go to Crèmerie SWIRL!" wrote another.
